Writing a Summary

SUMMARY LESSONS:
Follow the steps below BEFORE you choose the key words and cross off the unimportant words. 

1) Choose an article that you can READ, UNDERSTAND, and SUMMARIZE.  
2) Read the article entirely.
3) Decide the purpose the author had for writing the article.
4) Circle key words to support the purpose.
5) Cross off unimportant words.
6) Write notes on the page to support the purpose.  
7) Fill in the graphic organizer with important notes--no sentences.
8) Write a draft of your summary--revise--edit and write final.





FIRST DRAFT
In 2004, Oscar the dog was going to be euthanized in an spca shelter in Cappe town, South Africa. He was saved by JoAnne Lefson. In 2009  they went on a five continent tour to prove that shelter dogs are not old, disturbed or abused. Sharing a good example of adoption was a success because Joanne and Oscar influenced a broad audience. They are revisiting their favorite places today.
